FAQ

From your child’s first dental appointment to when they leave for college, going to the dentist is important to protect their oral health. The following list of dental FAQs should help answer most of your questions about your little one’s visits to our pediatric dentist at ABC Dental.

According to the Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry guidelines, your child should see a dentist within six months of their first tooth coming in. At the very latest, your child should have their first dental visit by the age of one, regardless of when their first teeth come in.

A pediatric dentist has training in the specialized care of infants and children and will guide their dental care through to their teen years. Pediatric dentists typically undergo additional training for two to three years after receiving their general dentistry qualifications, with a focus on childhood behaviour and development.

At ABC Dental, we love working with our young patients to make going to the dentist a positive experience and explain what happens during their checkups in simple, age-appropriate language.

The proper development of your child's baby teeth is crucial to the later development of their permanent teeth. Your child's baby teeth affect the way they speak, smile and chew. Without proper care, your child will likely experience pain and have difficulty enunciating and pronouncing words.

Baby teeth also reserve space in the jaw for permanent teeth to come in later. If your little one's baby teeth don't receive proper care, we may need to extract them before they fall out naturally. When this happens, your child's permanent teeth could come in crooked or crowded.

Decaying baby teeth can also cause painful infections for your child, especially if bacteria penetrate deep into a tooth's root bed.

If cavities are left untreated, your child could experience difficulty enunciating or pronouncing words, have trouble eating comfortably, and have oral pain or infection. Early detection of cavities, congenitally missing adult teeth, or extra supernumerary teeth are all conditions pediatric dentists are trained to look out for and recognize. These conditions are important  to establish as present, or rule out, early on  in order to avoid dental crowding and spacing issues as a teen or young adult. A referral to an orthodontist may be recommended in such cases.

The most important thing you can do to prepare for your child's first dentist appointment is to talk to them about what to expect. Keep your tone light and positive, reiterating how important it is to go to the dentist so that their teeth can grow strong and healthy.

Explore your pediatric dentist's office together using their website and point out fun activities they can do in the office while they wait. Explain to them that the dentist is there to help them and that their first visit will be short, fun, and easy.

Your first pediatric dental visit is really a chance for you and your child to get to know your dentist and our dental team. We will take a full medical history of your child, including any dental history. The dentist will then do a simple oral exam and note down the positions of any erupted teeth.

We will also check for cavities and signs of decay and advise you on the best way to keep your child's teeth healthy and clean.

We recommend scheduling dental checkups every six months. These visits include an oral exam and cleaning. When your child develops their full set of baby teeth, we will take X-rays to check for cavities in between the teeth and in correct position.

If you have any further questions about your child's pediatric dental care that are not covered on this dental FAQ page, please feel free to contact our office. Our ABC Dental staff is happy to answer all of your questions so that we can ensure you always have a positive experience during your child's pediatric dental visits.
